This realm is permanently frozen, making it a deadly place to stay for too long due to its incredibly low temperature. It is guarded by Hraesvelgr, an enormous eagle who serves as the guardian of the dead, earning her the name "the corpse eater". Helheim is known as the Realm of the Dead, for it is the realm where humans, Vanir and Aesir who have died a dishonorable death are destined to end up in, tortured by visions of their sins and misdeeds. While you visit Muspelheim mid-way through the game, you aren't able to access most of its Collectibles until much later in the story.

Like in the previous adventure, Surtr will have a host of combat challenges awaiting those strong enough to meet his combat trials, with rewards to upgrade Kratos' equipment and gear to their highest levels. Muspelheim is a primordial realm similar to Niflheim. Muspelheim is known as The Realm of Fire, believed to be the heat source for all of the Nine Realms. Muspelheim is also the home of the Fire Giant Surtr, who is prophesied to destroy Asgard and all other realms once Ragnarok begins, but, according to Mimir, he will only appear once Ragnarok starts.
While Midgard is the realm the story begins in, you are not able to fully explore it until later in the game. The region has also been overtaken by Raiders, including the torturous Kol Raiders. Mimir would also find himself trapped here and tortured by Odin atop its highest peak.įimbulwinter has heavily changed Midgard, as places like The Lake of the Nine are now frozen, forcing Kratos and Atreus to use wolf-driven sleds to traverse the icy terrain. This realm is where most of God of War 2018 took place as Kratos and Atreus went on their quest to spread Faye's ashes. After Freya left Odin, he banished her to this realm, using magic to ensure she couldn't travel to the other eight realms. Midgard is where Kratos' and Atreus' home is, and is where Kratos met Faye after the events of God of War III. Vanaheim Side Quest Favors: Vanaheim Side Quests In Freya's absence, the Aesir resumed their war and have since taken control of most of the realm, forcing resistance fighters like her brother Freyr to resort to guerrilla warfare to stay alive. This controversial move did result in peace, but was shattered when Freya eventually left him after seeing who Odin truly was.
Her people were long at war with Odin, but in an attempt to broker a peace, Mimir suggested Freya marry Odin. Vanaheim is the jungle realm and home to the Vanir, where Freya was once queen. The harsh desert may yet hold some secrets behind the elven war. While their first visit was on the lush side where the Light Elves reside, in Ragnarok they visit the more arid Barrens, typically occupied by the Dark Elves. In their previous adventure, Kratos and Atreus battled the Dark Elves and defeated their commander, shifting the tide of the war in ways they'll now discover. Notably, most of Niflheim will be inaccessible for most of the game, so don't fret that you can't find everything there for a long while.Īlfheim is the realm where the Light and Dark Elves are locked in an unending conflict centered around the use of The Light of Alfheim, which is where the souls of animals and dwarves go after death. Here Kratos can use a combat training arena to practice and level up his existing Skills, as well as tend to a mysterious side quest rewarding you for slaying Odin's Ravens. This time around he's in a colder part of the realm, far from the poisonous mists of Ivaldi's Workshop.
Niflheim is the realm of mist, and a place that Kratos visited during his last adventure. Svartalfheim is the first realm you get to truly explore with its various mining establishments, and the only one with a major settlement in Nidavellir. The dwarves name their home realm Nidavellir, the same name as their capital city.
Svartalfheim's name is a bit of a misnomer, as the Aesir named it despite dwarves having little similarity to the elves of Alfheim. Thanks to Fimbulwinter, Svartalfheim has much heavier geothermal activity than normal, increasing the presence of geysers and a sulfurous stench. This is where the Huldra Brothers, Brok and Sindri, originate from, however they left due to mysterious circumstances. Svartalfheim is the dwarven realm, and one of the new realms you can go to during God of War Ragnarok's main journey.
